From private to public
By Nicholas Wehunt
Transitioning from private school to public school, was a big change in my life, and it determined who most of my friends are now. Public school showed me the other side of life, and how much easier public school is. In public school the kid’s are more lade back, and academically it’s a breeze. I’ll do my best to explain how private school shields you from the rest of the world.
Now coming from a private school to a public school was a humongous change for me. My neighbor had gone to public school his whole life, and was always telling us how much better it was than prince avenue. For about three years I wanted so badly to go to Hilsman middle school, but my mom wouldn’t let me. Finally, I failed 7th grade at Prince, and got sent to Hilsman. I was ecstatic about going. I couldn’t hold myself together the night before the first day of school.
I woke up that morning for the first day of school, hopped in the shower and got ready. Then my neighbor Patrick came and got me and we were off. I heard many cool things from my neighbor, like fights, free lunch, and pretty girls. Of course he didn’t even get close to warning me about it. I got to my first period and sat down with two guys named Osama and Justin. There my first two acquaintances, and I remember sitting at our table and a group of girls snickering at us. They were drawing some pictures, and I happened to catch one of the pictures out of the corner of my eye. These girls were drawing pictures of Justin and me. They happened to have a picture of my big bulging eyes. I mean that mad me feel terrible inside, I thought about that for the next two weeks.
The teacher comes in; finally first period ends and we walk into the hall. Hear I am walking down the hall, and spot Patrick. I go up and see him and saying, "what’s up", and he introduces me to Kevin killpatrick, and Josh Thomas. The day goes on and I’m fine, then we all go home, what a day. Kevin was a little short brown-headed kid that was fool of energy at all times. Josh Thomas on the other hand was a blonde short kid that loved to curse and destroy things, and also was full of energy.
That weekend I start to hang out with Josh, Kevin, and Pat and become really good friends with them and that’s when the bad seed started to sprout out of me. Later on in the year, I become better acquainted with every one and started to enjoy Hilsman. The year went on and at the end of the 7th grade, in about March, we started to experiment with marijuana. At the time we didn’t know how much trouble we could get in, but we loved it. About two to three days before school ended, we all got busted. My older brother had told his girlfriend what we were doing, -bad idea. She told my mom, and my mom relayed to all the rest of the parents. I didn’t get to see my public school friends the whole summer, it sucked but I had another solution.
That summer I went to Robert’s house, my private school buddy. That’s when I meet Kara Crowe, my new girlfriend. She lived in Robert’s neighborhood, and since I couldn’t smoke weed anymore, I moved on to high-class cigars. Robert and I were always going into his dad’s cigar box and taking his Cubans. About At the end of June that summer, Kara and her parents went to the lake house, and stayed for about a week. The first night they were gone Robert Bob, Alex, and I went over to her house and found one of their spare house keys under a jar in the garage room. We got the key out and entered the house.
All of us were looking around her kitchen and eating their food then went into her room, and panty raided her drawers. We went down stairs and found two big cigar boxes, and they happened to have 50 Cubans in them. We started smoking them, and then we left and took the rest with us, again "bad idea". Later that week I told Kara about us going into her house and she was cool with it. At the end of the week they came home, and her dad went downstairs to enjoy a Cuban. He opened the box and there was nothing there, opened the other box, nothing. He was furious, he called the police and everything. After that he went outside to see were his spare key was, it was gone. Later that next day he started to question Kara, and she cracked, but she ratted Bob, and Alex out. So from there they got into trouble and ratted us out. The rest of the summer I was grounded and with no girlfriend.
So the next school year came rolling around and I was finally free again. Then Josh, Bobby, Jarred and I started to hang out again. "Oh god trouble’s back", but we added some girls to our gang this time. Anna, Sara, Anna and Sara were the same girls who drew the pictures about me in 7th grade, but I forgave them. Josh had been going out with Sara for about a year then, so those two were always with us and the partying started again. All of 8th grade we partied down, we went back to smoking marijuana and as well as that we started to drink to. We did that until the end of the school year when my mom caught us again, of course.
All these events have molded me into a better and more intelligent person, and now I have put my parting days behind me. I hope you have learned through this that isn’t worth it to be a wild teenager, but it sure does make things a bit more exciting. Don’t forget that while all of this was going on, I was still a good student. Well that was my middle school epiphany in a nut shell, just don’t repeat me.
